About the name
Sting's stage name came from a black-and-yellow striped jumper he wore with the Phoenix Jazzmen, which made bandleader Gordon Solomon say he looked like a wasp.
A change of course
Before music paid, Sting qualified as a teacher in 1973 and taught for two years at St Paul's First School in Cramlington.
Big break
Sting decided to leave the Police while onstage at Shea Stadium on 18 August 1983, because playing that New York venue felt like reaching Everest.
Languages
Sting sang four songs from ...Nothing Like the Sun in Spanish and Portuguese for the 1988 release Nada como el sol.
A first
In 2015 Sting released "Stolen Car", a duet with the French singer Mylène Farmer. The song, a cover from his 2003 album Sacred Love, went straight to number one on French iTunes and then the main French singles chart, his first number one in France.
