Samuel West

Biography

Samuel West is an English actor and theater director who has also worked as a narrator. Born in Hammersmith, London, he played King Caspian in the BBC serial The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in 1989, choosing to concentrate on acting rather than drama school. He appeared in Reunion (1989) as well, and earned a BAFTA nomination for best supporting actor as Leonard Bast in the Merchant Ivory adaptation of Howards End (1992). Other films include Carrington (1995), Jane Eyre, Iris, Van Helsing (2004), and Darkest Hour (2017). His London stage debut came in 1989; in 1993 he was Valentine in the National Theatre's first staging of Tom Stoppard's Arcadia, and at the Royal Shakespeare Company he later took the leads in Richard II and Hamlet, both directed by Steven Pimlott. He has directed for stage and radio, ran Sheffield Theatres as artistic director from 2005 to 2007, and plays Siegfried Farnon in All Creatures Great and Small.
