Plot summary
The First Crusade is over. Sir Gregory, with fewer than ten men left, finds a relic at Mount Hermon, a fragment of the cross of the crucifixion, and means to carry it to Rome. His remaining company includes his squire Paul, the friar George and the arrogant Sir Robert. The ship they charter is caught in a storm and beaches, the crew lost overboard, so the knights continue by land. They come upon a band of Turks and some civilians under attack by bandits and drive the bandits off. Two Turks, Hasan and Safa, and a woman named Rebecca throw in with the company, which takes the overland road to Rome.
