Plot summary
Lytton Strachey, a conscientious objector awaiting a military hearing, is staying at Vanessa Bell's house when he meets the painter Dora Carrington. He assumes she is a boy and is disappointed to learn otherwise, and on a countryside hike she tells him she too wishes she had been born a boy. His forced kiss angers her. Mark Gertler, meanwhile, has spent four years trying to get Carrington into bed, with much of their circle pressing her to agree. Lytton appears to go along with that campaign yet falls into a deeper attachment of his own, and on a trip to Wales he suggests that he and Carrington set up house together. Medical grounds keep him out of the war and out of prison.

- Michael Nyman's score for Carrington grew mainly out of his own String Quartet No.3: director Christopher Hampton made a temp track from it and wanted it used as a leitmotif for Lytton Strachey.
- Nyman also wrote new material for the film, including the cue "Virgin on the roof," which was incorporated into his String Quartet No. 4, and a theme for the painter Mark Gertler derived from his 3 Quartets.
