Plot summary
In 1962 England, Edward Mayhew and Florence Ponting meet after each has finished university. He studies history at University College, London and loves rock and roll. She plays classical violin at Oxford and leads a quartet of her own. The two fall for each other fast, visit each other's families and choose to marry even though they come from different backgrounds and different social standing. Florence keeps a private dread of the wedding, driven by her fears about sex, and there is nobody she can speak to about it. On their honeymoon at Chesil Beach, both are inexperienced, and Edward's temper surfaces.
