Plot summary
Sir Walter Elliot, a vain baronet, can escape ruin only by retrenching. He agrees to move the family to Bath and let Kellynch Hall, which Admiral Croft takes; the admiral's brother-in-law is Captain Frederick Wentworth. Lady Russell had once urged Anne Elliot to turn down his proposal, on the ground that he had neither prospects nor connections. Service in the wars has made him wealthy, and he is back in England, while Anne, whose family has gone to Bath, visits her sister Mary at Uppercross. When the captain comes to dine with the Musgroves, Anne stays away and nurses Mary's injured son. A brief morning visit follows, their first encounter since she turned him down, and he is soon a frequent guest at Uppercross.

- During the shoot, Persuasion's crew competed for costumes and props with the BBC's Pride and Prejudice, which was filming at the same time, and had to send for replacement items from Italy and Australia.
- WGBH Boston, the American co-producer, wanted a better-known actress for Anne Elliot, but agreed to cast Amanda Root in the lead after seeing her screen test.
- Pianist Susan Tomes was hired after the film was shot and edited to another pianist's recording, which could not be used because permission could not be obtained, and she had to copy that pianist's timing exactly.
- The only authentic Royal Navy vessel of the period the crew could get was Nelson's, dry-docked at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, so filming was possible only in short periods when it was closed to the public.
- Alexandra Byrne, who was designing period costumes for a film for the first time, won a BAFTA for Best Costume Design for her work on Persuasion.

The film's low budget meant that the closing shot of Anne and Wentworth gazing at the ocean, and a shot of Admiral Croft's ship, were both taken from the 1984 film The Bounty.
