Plot summary
Henry Strauss is an American lawyer who grew up in Germany, where he was called Hans. He left with his Jewish family in 1933, after Adolf Hitler came to power, and has not been back since he left as a young man. Now he prepares to return to Germany, hoping to renew a friendship from his boyhood with Konradin von Lohenburg. In 1933 Stuttgart, Hans, a doctor's son, and Konradin, who comes from an aristocratic family, travel together and talk about ideas while the Nazi movement grows around them. The friendship returns to Henry in memory as he plans the journey back.
