Plot summary
Officer Johnny Kelly has written a letter of resignation and intends to hand it in at the end of his shift; he took the police job to please his father and is disillusioned with it. He calls the crooked attorney Penrod Biddel to accept an offer of work and agrees to meet him that evening. Biddel wants Johnny to take Hayes Stewart across the state line into Indiana, where the police can jail him. Johnny refuses, then relents when Biddel tells him that his brother Stubby is mixed up with Stewart. Biddel pays him five thousand dollars. Johnny's wife Kathy has learned of the resignation and asks his father, Sgt. John Kelly Sr., to intervene. Johnny's regular partner is out sick, so Sgt. Joe rides with him.
