Plot summary

On a train toward Wyoming, drifter Dempsey Rae saves seventeen-year-old Jeff Jimson after a brakeman throws him off for hitching a ride. In town Dempsey looks up Idonee, a saloon girl he knows, with Jeff at his heels, and there they meet Strap Davis, foreman of a ranch whose owner back East, Reed Bowman, is taking over the open range. Strap hires them both, and Dempsey teaches Jeff to ride and rope while he grows angry over the smaller ranchers' plan to put up barbed wire and stop Reed from taking the grazing land. Reed's plan to bring in more cattle and exhaust the grass worries both men.
