Plot summary
Andrew Marr dies and the mansion he owned passes to Edward Foster, who inherits the estate and decides to renovate the old house and live in it. The place has a reputation for being haunted, and attempts are made to frighten Foster away, but he stays. What he does not know is that Marr's former physician, Dr Ian Mandeville, and Mandeville's sister Sarah are searching the grounds for two suitcases of money that are said to lie hidden somewhere on the estate. The solicitor Prescott hunts the same money, hoping to claim it for himself. None of the three tells Foster what they are after.

- Christopher Lee said Dark Places was shot in an empty, abandoned house not far from Pinewood Studios, where water dripped down the walls and there was no plumbing or heating, which made it a thoroughly uncomfortable film to make. He called the derelict location "perfect casting" because Robert Hardy's character's house was meant to be in a similar state.
- Director Don Sharp called Dark Places a "very strange production" whose producer, James Hannah, an American heir to a shipping fortune who had dabbled in theater shows, was eccentric. Sharp said nobody could figure out why Hannah was making the movie, and there were rumors it was being made as a tax loss.
- Dark Places was delayed in release, and Don Sharp said there were rumors it had disappeared. Twenty years after filming was completed, he began receiving cheques from the film being sold to cable TV in Switzerland.
- Joan Collins, who plays Sarah Mandeville, wrote that the British press dubbed her "Queen of the Horror Films" for the run of horror and psychological thrillers she made in England in the 1970s, a title she did not particularly relish.
