Plot summary
In the autumn of 1913, Sir Randolph and Minnie Nettleby host a weekend pheasant shoot at their English estate. Gilbert, Lord Hartlip and Lionel Stephens begin competing to shoot the most birds; Hartlip is an expert shot who feels threatened by Stephens's skill, while Stephens hopes to impress the married Olivia, whom he loves. Hartlip's wife, Aline, is having an indiscreet affair with fellow guest Sir Reuben Hergesheimer. The Nettlebys' granddaughter Cicely is letting Count Tibor Rakassyi court her, much to the disapproval of her mother Ida. Sir Randolph, world weary, sees that this aristocratic way of life cannot last.

- Paul Scofield was cast as Sir Randolph Nettleby but was seriously injured on the first day of shooting. Rather than delay a year, the filmmakers recast the part: James Mason, then finishing the BBC's Doctor Fischer of Geneva, took over six weeks later.
- Released posthumously, The Shooting Party was the last film appearance by James Mason, who plays the landowner Sir Randolph Nettleby.
