Plot summary
Cassie Grant cannot say where she comes from. A car driven by Marion Kirkman struck her on the road into Ashby Wake, and the hospital finds nothing wrong with her but her memory, which holds only her name and her native country. Marion, who feels responsible, brings her home to the large rural house she shares with her husband Simon, an art historian, and her son Michael. Simon is examining a church from the first century, recently found buried near the town. Cassie becomes close to Michael, meets a man named Dan Blakeley whom she is sure she knows from somewhere, and begins to have visions of the people around her.
