Plot summary
In 13th-century England, Prince John rules from the throne, backed by his henchman Sir Guy of Gisbourne and ridiculed by his mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine. During his birthday revels he learns that his older brother Richard is not dead but held for ransom in Austria, and that Richard is the rightful king, which creates a problem for him. Gisbourne suggests taxing Saxon peasants to raise the sum, telling the prince privately that the king will probably die of pneumonia first and the money will stay with them. Robin Hood interrupts the revels in disguise, reciting an offensive poem, and Gisbourne demands the stranger lead him to the outlaw camp in Sherwood Forest. Eleanor urges Lady Marian to play up to Gisbourne's advances so he will help Robin.
