Plot summary
At Green Gables on Prince Edward Island, Matthew Cuthbert and his sister Marilla arrange for a boy from an orphanage to come and help with the farm work. The child who steps off the train is Anne Shirley, a girl, and Matthew is taken aback. Anne has lived in orphanages and with the Hammond family in Nova Scotia. Marilla puts her on trial, undecided about keeping her at the farm. In Avonlea, Anne meets Diana Barry, who lives across the pond, and Gilbert Blythe, a classmate who teases her about her red hair. Rachel Lynde, a friend of Marilla's, criticizes her looks, and Anne loses her temper with her.

- Katharine Hepburn recommended her great niece Schuyler Grant to play Anne Shirley. Director Kevin Sullivan wanted Grant, but executives resisted casting an American as a Canadian icon, so Grant played Diana and Megan Follows won the title role.
- Megan Follows was quickly dismissed by Kevin Sullivan after her first audition, but a frantic second audition, after a turbulent morning, won her the role.
- Both parts of the film were among the highest-rated programs of any genre ever to air on a Canadian television network.
- A year after the mini-series aired, Canadian comedy duo Wayne and Shuster created and starred in a parody, Sam of Green Gables, in which a curmudgeonly old man named Sam is sent to Green Gables instead of Anne.
