Plot summary
For years Jake Farris has performed at The Rhinestone, a country music nightclub in New York, bound by a contract she cannot break. She tells Freddie Ugo, who runs the club, that two weeks are enough to turn any ordinary man into a country sensation. Freddie takes the bet and stakes the rest of her contract: if she wins, it becomes void; if she loses, five more years are added and she must also sleep with him. He gets to choose the man, and he chooses Nick Martinelli, a New York cabbie with no musical gift who says he hates country music worse than liver. Jake takes Nick to her hometown, Leiper's Fork, Tennessee, to teach him how a country star walks, talks and behaves.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Stallone's agents at CAA had been positioning him to direct the film himself; when he declined to pursue the position, it was decided to let him direct it in fact while Don Zimmerman remained the director of record, and Zimmerman was never let in on the secret.
- Mike Ovitz, whose talent firm Creative Artists Agency represented both Dolly Parton and Stallone, insisted Fox take one of its male stars if they wanted Parton; according to one insider, CAA said "If you want her, you better take him", ending discussion of anyone else for the part.
- Phil Alden Robinson publicly distanced himself from the film during its release, taking the unusual step of mounting his own publicity campaign criticizing it, saying the humor and intelligence of the original script had been replaced with vulgarity, caricature and farce, and sending letters to film critics.
- Three weeks into production Zimmerman was fired and the production shut down while the studio sought a new director; contrary to Stallone's later statements, director Mike Nichols was never considered for, much less affiliated with, Rhinestone.
- Sylvester Stallone reportedly turned down Romancing the Stone to make Rhinestone, and was paid $5 million and a percentage of the gross.
- Bob Clark reportedly received $1 million to direct, plus a guaranteed fee for his next project at Fox, whether or not it was ever produced.
- In 2006 Sylvester Stallone said the most fun he ever had on a movie was with Dolly Parton on Rhinestone.
