Plot summary
Jacob "J.W." Ewing's family has ranched a fertile Western valley for generations, and he wants to control all of it, keeping farmers and oilmen out. Neil Atkinson, a wealthy oil executive whose father backed J.W., visits and wants the whole valley explored for oil. With his henchmen, J.W. has bought out the neighboring ranchers as their finances failed. Ella Connors is the last holdout, running her family's land with Dodger, an aging cowhand. She has sold part of it to Frank Athearn, a war veteran, to cover her debts. Ella would rather leave her past with J.W. behind her, and J.W. keeps raising it. Ella and Frank, each set on ranching, form an uneasy alliance.

- On 18 August 1977, stuntman Jim Sheppard was killed while filming a scene in which a horse dragged Jason Robards's character Jacob "J.W." Ewing; the horse veered off course and Sheppard hit his head on a fence post. The scene stayed in the film but is cut just before the gate where the accident happened.
