Plot summary
Carter Doc McCoy and his wife Carol practice with pistols when Rudy Travis arrives. He proposes breaking Luis Mendoza out of jail for $300,000. The breakout works, but Ramon wanted Luis free to kill him. Rudy waits with a getaway plane, spots police cars and leaves Doc behind. Doc spends a year in a Mexican jail. He sends Carol to Jack Benyon, a mob boss assembling a crew to rob an Arizona dog track. Benyon arranges Doc's release in return for sexual favors from Carol. Doc meets the hired men, among them Rudy and Frank Hansen.

- Walter Hill was set to direct this remake with Alec Baldwin starring, but according to Baldwin a hassle over the budget made Hill leave the project to go and make Geronimo instead.
- Alec Baldwin, who had fallen in love with Kim Basinger while making The Marrying Man, asked her to play Carol McCoy; her first reaction was to say no, and she only accepted after going back to Jim Thompson's original novel to look for a deeper theme.
- The Border Hotel in El Paso was not in Texas at all: it was the Hotel Del Sol (formerly the Hotel Del Ming) in Yuma, part of a shoot that also took in Yuma, Phoenix and the Apache Lodge in Prescott, Arizona.
