Plot summary
The Turners leave Baltimore for Franklin Falls, Virginia, hoping for a new start. The move unsettles thirteen-year-old Matt, whose mother has died and whose father Steve has married Laura. The family takes in a stray collie, Lassie, and she becomes his companion. When Steve's planned job falls through, Matt, with his grandfather Len Collins, talks the family into a sheep farm, the dream his mother had held. Their neighbor Sam Garland, who runs a large sheep operation, wants to block them, since their land takes in grazing ground he has used. Sam's sons Josh and Jim attend Matt's school, and Josh resents Matt, especially because April Porter prefers Matt's company.
