Plot summary
In the rural New Mexico town of Furnace Flats, days after the old man Pete Jensen dies, a young stranger, Nick Richards, arrives, says the dead man was his uncle, and moves into his shack. There he performs demonic rituals meant to come between Nell Lucas and her fiancé, the auto mechanic David Simpson. When David is attacked and disfigured by his own dog, Nick offers to run the gas station for him while he recovers. The townspeople notice that Nick does not perspire even in the heat, and that the sheriff's dog is the only one in town uneasy around him.
