Plot summary
Germany has surrendered, and Wilhelm Grimm, a Nazi officer, is brought before a court for war crimes. Witnesses are called to speak about him, among them the priest Father Warecki, his brother Karl and Marja Pacierkowski. Their accounts carry the trial back through Grimm's life. He fought for Germany in the First World War and lost a leg. Afterwards he returns to Lidzbark, the village where he taught, and to Marja, to whom he was engaged before the war.
