Maude Eburne

Biography

Maude Eburne, a Canadian actress who worked in theater and movies, built a reputation on oddball characters. She was born in Bronte-on-the-Lake, Ontario, and trained in elocution in Toronto. Her professional start came in stock theater in Buffalo, New York, and her early stage work took her through Ontario and New York City. Her Broadway debut came in 1914 in the farce A Pair of Sixes, where she played Coddles and received great acclaim. Eburne went on to play humorous domestic parts on stage, with credits including Lady Butterfly (1923), Many a Slip (1930), The Half Moon (1920), and Three Cheers (1928). Her first significant movie role, and her first sound film, was in The Bat Whispers (1930), which Roland West directed as a sound reworking of The Bat, his silent film from 1926. She died in 1960.
