Ruth Terry

Biography

Ruth Terry was an American singer and actress who worked in films and television from the 1930s through the 1960s. Born in Benton Harbor, Michigan, she won singing prizes as a child, performed with the Paul Ash Theater Orchestra at twelve, and left her hometown at that age to sing with Clyde McCoy's orchestra. Walter Winchell is said to have given her the stage name by joining the surnames of two well-known ballplayers. Her screen debut came with Love and Hisses in 1937, and her first western paired her with Gene Autry in Call of the Canyon; several Roy Rogers pictures followed. Pistol Packin' Mama, drawn from the song of the same name, was her best-known film. She continued singing on a limited basis while making movies, appearing as a guest vocalist on The Bob Crosby Show on NBC radio in 1943, and retired in 1947.
