Plot summary
A man named Fenton Meiks visits the Dallas office of FBI Agent Wesley Doyle and says the God's Hand serial killings Doyle is working were done by his brother Adam. Doyle doubts him. Meiks then describes the summer of 1979 in Thurman, Texas, where he and his younger brother Adam lived with their father, a widowed mechanic, in the groundskeeper's cottage behind a rose garden. Their father said an angel had visited him and told the family to destroy demons that live on earth disguised as people. He received a list of names and three objects he considered holy: a pair of work gloves, a piece of pipe, and an axe with Otis carved into it. Fenton was frightened. Adam, the younger boy, believed.
