Plot summary
A nuclear engineer in the U.S. Army, Major Hank Marshall argues for underground nuclear tests, the program code-named Blue Sky, rather than open-air detonations, and his superiors want his reports buried. His wife Carly is volatile, swinging between anger and exuberance, and their daughters Alex and Becky have weathered her cycles before. The Army transfers the family from Hawaii to a rundown base in rural Alabama, where Carly tears at the leftover furnishings and then goes shopping to fix the house up. Hank presents his evidence to base commander Colonel Vince Johnson, who will not hear it. At a party given by the officers' wives, an intoxicated Carly dances with Vince while Hank and Vera Johnson watch. Alex, meanwhile, begins slipping away to see Glenn Johnson, the commander's son.
