David Wanderley falls to his death in New York City, and his twin brother Don comes home to Milburn, the New England town where they grew up, at the request of their father, Edward Charles Wanderley. Edward spends one evening a week with three old friends, the lawyer Sears James, the physician John Jaffrey and the businessman Ricky Hawthorne. The four call themselves the Chowder Society and trade tales of horror. The older men also carry a secret from 1929, when they knew a woman named Eva Galli. Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Ghost Story (1981)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The filming process was emotionally turbulent for star Fred Astaire, who confided that he felt he was going to die or be murdered while shooting the film, and at one point considered dropping out of the production. But it was co-star Melvyn Douglas who died, about four months before the film was released.
- This was the final feature film for Astaire, the final film for Fairbanks and the final completed film for Douglas, and the first film to feature Michael O'Neill.
- The film's special makeup effects were designed by Dick Smith, who with a team of artists including Rick Baker and Carl Fullerton created multiple life-sized puppets of Eva/Alma in different stages of decay.
- Dick Smith also created a “faceless” dummy with a gaping mouth and no eyes to appear as Eva, but it was not included in the final film. The eyeless apparition design was later used in a hallucination sequence in the 1999 film House on Haunted Hill, with Smith receiving credit for the design.
