Plot summary
Timmy Cleary comes home to the Bronx after World War II. His parents, John and Nettie, have drifted apart and argue at the slightest thing. Timmy was once closer to his mother, but now he finds more common ground with his father, a salesman. He works to stay neutral whenever he steps into their quarrels. One day, while he and John are returning from a visit to the family's summer cottage, Timmy buys a bouquet of roses and urges John to give them to Nettie. She is delighted by what looks like her husband's thoughtfulness, and the three spend the evening at a nightclub in Manhattan.

- The film was a comeback for Patricia Neal, who was recovering from a stroke she had suffered three years earlier and had not appeared on screen since In Harm's Way in 1965. While filming she struggled with memory problems and physical limitations, and memorized a five-page monologue she had to do in one take.
- The Subject Was Roses was the first film directed by Ulu Grosbard, who had been nominated for a Tony Award for directing the 1964 Broadway production of Frank D. Gilroy's play.
