Biography

Norman Lloyd was an American actor, producer, and director whose career in entertainment lasted almost a hundred years and included theater, radio, television, and film. Born in Jersey City in 1914, he was a professional child performer by age nine and studied at Eva Le Gallienne's Civic Repertory Theatre. During the 1930s he joined the Federal Theatre Project's Living Newspaper unit, then became a charter member of Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre. He played a fifth columnist in Alfred Hitchcock's Saboteur (1942), beginning a long professional association with Hitchcock, and he later appeared in Spellbound (1945) and worked as an associate producer and director on Alfred Hitchcock Presents. He directed and produced television episodes for many years. His film roles included Bodalink in Limelight (1952), Finley in The Southerner (1945), and Mr. Nolan in Dead Poets Society (1989). On television he played Dr. Daniel Auschlander on St. Elsewhere and Dr. Isaac Mentnor on Seven Days. He died in 2021.

Early training
Lloyd was 17 when he tried out in 1932 and was taken on as the youngest apprentice at Eva Le Gallienne's Civic Repertory Theatre in New York City, where May Sarton was in charge.
First role
Lloyd's first Broadway show was a 1935 production of Andre Obey's Noah, which he auditioned for on the suggestion of director Joseph Losey.
Beyond film
Lloyd appeared on the first of four Mercury Text Records releases, Shakespeare recordings that Welles and Roger Hill adapted for teachers. In The Merchant of Venice he played Salanio and Launcelot Gobbo, and the Columbia Masterworks recording came out in 1939.
Beyond film
Lloyd played Johnny Appleseed in the 1938 Broadway play Everywhere I Roam. He said that before the Tony Awards, being chosen by critics for their year-end Ten Best Performers list was the greatest recognition.
