Plot summary
Father Tom Farrow is the Catholic priest of a small Alabama town. A king cobra gets loose during a transport and kills two railroad workers on the way there, and that night librarian Evelyn Downs tells Farrow an ancient foe has come to take his soul. The next day, a rattlesnake attacks two tree loggers, and after a body is found with unusual puncture wounds, Dr. Maggie Sheridan calls in herpetologist Dr. Paul Hendricks. The cobra is also stirring up the ordinary snakes of the area, and a rattlesnake turns up in Maggie's own home, where Paul kills it. He spends the night at her house afterward to comfort her.
