Plot summary
Around the clock, Q-SKY fills the airwaves with rock, and the man behind its rise is Jeff Dugan, who programs the station and hosts the morning show. He has assembled the rest of the on-air lineup: Mother on nights, Prince overnight, and Doc Holiday at midday. Corporate management expects that audience to be turned into advertising revenue, and hires a sales manager, Regis Lamar, to do it. Lamar brings Jeff a contract for a series of Army recruitment spots. Jeff refuses to endorse it, so Lamar takes the matter to upper management, which orders Jeff to run the ads exactly as the Army supplied them and on the schedule the contract sets.

- Record company executive Irving Azoff was an executive producer on FM but disowned it before release and asked Universal to take his name off the credits, which the studio did. Azoff said the film was not an authentic representation of the music business and that the studio reneged on its promise to give him creative control, especially over the music choices.
- FM was the first film to feature Queen's music on its soundtrack, the album also carried the Eagles, James Taylor, Bob Seger, Dan Fogelberg and Billy Joel, and by 2020 Queen songs had appeared in nearly 100 other movies.
