Biography

Natalie Schafer was an American actress who started on the Broadway stage before relocating to Los Angeles in 1941 to act in films. Born in Red Bank, New Jersey, in 1900, she appeared in 17 Broadway plays between 1927 and 1959, usually in supporting parts. Among them were Lady in the Dark, The Doughgirls, and Romanoff and Juliet. On screen she often played sophisticated women. She became best known for her television role as Lovey Howell on Gilligan's Island from 1964 to 1967, a part she later reprised in the made-for-television film Rescue from Gilligan's Island (1978) and voiced in animated spinoffs. She also worked on daytime serials such as Search for Tomorrow and Love of Life. She gave her final performance in the 1990 television film I'm Dangerous Tonight.
