Nancy Gates
Biography
Nancy Gates was an American actress of film and television who started performing as a child in Denton, Texas, and hosted a two-year radio show on Dallas station WFAA while attending Denton High School. She signed with RKO at fifteen, a contract requiring court approval because she was a minor, and Orson Welles screen-tested her for The Magnificent Ambersons. Her first credited role came in The Great Gildersleeve, and after joining RKO she appeared in Hitler's Children. She became known for B movies, many of them westerns or science fiction, often as the heroine, and her films included Check Your Guns, Roll, Thunder, Roll!, and Comanche Station (1960). She had supporting parts in the Frank Sinatra films Some Came Running (1958) and Suddenly (1954). On television she made 55 appearances, among them Perry Mason, Maverick, Wagon Train, and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. In all she acted in 34 films and serials before retiring in 1969.

First role
Gates first appeared on radio in a September 29, 1941, broadcast of CBS Radio's The Orson Welles Show. In it she acted opposite Welles in a version of Sherwood Anderson's short story "I'm a Fool".
A role that slipped away
Orson Welles screen-tested Gates for The Magnificent Ambersons, a 1942 film. She lost the role to Anne Baxter, but the test opened the door for her future entry into film.
