Plot summary
Philip Marshall runs a shop in Edwardian London and takes the constant scolding of his wife Cora without complaint. Their son John has been driven away by her temper. When Mary Gray, a young stenographer, comes to the shop looking for work, Philip befriends her, and over time his affection for her grows, though he keeps the friendship proper. Cora learns of the two of them and refuses when Philip asks for a divorce, threatening a public scandal instead. To spare Mary's name, Philip ends the friendship and cuts off all contact, then tries to reconcile with Cora, but the marriage does not improve.

- Director Robert Siodmak was warned that Charles Laughton usually had bouts of uncertainty halfway through a film, so when it struck during The Suspect he staged a prepared tantrum that calmed Laughton down and let the production carry on without trouble.
- Siodmak said the film had the greatest difficulty finding anyone to act with Charles Laughton; to control him, the director deliberately withheld the full script and discussed each scene with him the night before filming.
