Biography

Mark Rylance is an English actor, playwright and theater director who began his professional career in 1980 at the Glasgow Citizens' Theatre and went on to serve as the first artistic director of Shakespeare's Globe from 1995 to 2005. He won Olivier Awards for Much Ado About Nothing and Jerusalem, and three Tony Awards, for Boeing-Boeing, Jerusalem and Twelfth Night. On screen he appeared in Prospero's Books (1991), Intimacy (2001) and The Other Boleyn Girl (2008) before winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor as Rudolf Abel in Steven Spielberg's Bridge of Spies (2015). He worked with Spielberg again on The BFG (2016) and Ready Player One (2018), and appeared in Dunkirk (2017), The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020), Bones and All (2022) and The Outfit (2022). On television he won BAFTA awards for The Government Inspector and Wolf Hall, playing Thomas Cromwell and returning to the role in 2024.
