Plot summary
In 1988, Maren Yearly is a teenager in Virginia. She slips out to a classmate's sleepover and bites the girl's finger, so her father Frank moves her to Maryland. Not long after her eighteenth birthday he goes, leaving her money, a cassette and her birth certificate. The recording describes how as a small child she killed her babysitter and the episodes that came after, and Frank's hope that she can overcome the urge. Maren sets off toward the town where her mother Janelle was born, a woman she has never known. On the way she meets Sully, an eater who found her by smell, and Lee, another eater, who offers her a ride.

- The producers, director Luca Guadagnino, star Timothée Chalamet and the rest of the cast deferred their salaries until MGM bought the North American distribution rights, which producer Melzi d'Eril said helped with investors; Guadagnino and screenwriter David Kajganich credited Chalamet as the main reason the film got financed.
- While shooting Bones and All in Ohio, break-ins into some crew members' cars led to a request for $50,000 from Cincinnati City Council for extra security; after criticism of spending taxpayer money on a private enterprise, the council granted the funds.
- Director Luca Guadagnino only read David Kajganich's Bones and All script as a favour to their friendship, then joined the project on the condition that Timothée Chalamet, his star on Call Me by Your Name, also came aboard.
- Bones and All was the first MGM film distributed internationally by Warner Bros. under their new multi-year international theatrical pact, which followed MGM's earlier deal with Universal Pictures.
