Plot summary
William Adamson, a naturalist, returns to Victorian England from an expedition to the Amazon with nothing, his possessions lost in a shipwreck. His patron, a wealthy baronet, takes him into his household. William catalogs the family's specimen collection and teaches the younger children natural science alongside their governess, Matty Crompton, who encourages his scientific work. He also observes an ant colony in the forest, planning a book about it. He is drawn to Eugenia, the eldest daughter, who is quiet and anxious and mourning her fiancé, and she accepts his marriage proposal. Her father approves the match, but her brother Edgar dislikes William's humble origins.
