Plot summary
Kate Dibiasky, who is working on her doctorate in astronomy at Michigan State University, finds a comet that was not previously known. Her adviser, Dr. Randall Mindy, does the math and gets about six months before it strikes Earth, with an extinction-level event. Dr. Teddy Oglethorpe, who leads the Planetary Defense Coordination Office, checks their work and travels with them to the White House, where President Janie Orlean and her son Jason, the Chief of Staff, show little interest. Oglethorpe pushes the two scientists to bring the news to The Daily Rip, where Jack Bremmer and Brie Evantee, the hosts, do not take the warning seriously. Kate speaks her mind on the air and walks out. The NASA administrator, a donor without a science background, plays the announcement down.
