Plot summary
Gloucester is the town where the young man at the center grew up, and he has come back to it from time spent in a psychiatric unit. Dunleavy, a garage mechanic, meets him and takes him back under his wing, and the two embrace and smile. Around the young man are people he does not really understand and who do not understand him. His mother has disappeared, and the mystery of that shapes the fractured identity he carries home. In the forest nearby something waits, silent and old as the trees, and the story is told as a modern fairy tale.
