Plot summary
In 2006 Jim Terrier is a black-ops mercenary in the Democratic Republic of Congo, on a team a corporation has deployed under security cover. He falls in love with Annie, an NGO doctor at a local hospital. Multinational mining companies profit from the country's mines, and when the Minister of Mining announces that their contracts are unjust and will be renegotiated, the companies pay Terrier's team to kill him. Terrier fires the fatal shot, flees Africa and leaves Annie, then retires from mercenary work. Eight years on he returns as a charity worker drilling wells. A local hit squad assaults him, and the signs he finds on the attackers show the attack was aimed at him. He flies to London to learn who wants him dead.
