Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Bridge of Spies (2015)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The prisoner exchange was filmed on the Glienicke Bridge itself, where the historical swap took place in 1962, with the bridge closed to traffic for a weekend. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and former president Bill Clinton visited the set to watch.
- The film shows Powers' U-2 hit by a volley of three missiles; in reality only the first of the three hit it, more than 14 were launched, and a MiG-19 scrambled to intercept was shot down by friendly fire in the same salvo, killing the pilot Sergei Safronov.
- The real Soviet intelligence officer Rudolf Abel lived and operated in Brooklyn Heights and made dead drops of stolen documents in Prospect Park. His arrest was written about by another Heights resident of the time, Truman Capote, in his book A House on the Heights.
- John Williams was announced as composer but had to drop out over a health issue, so Spielberg called in Thomas Newman. It was the first Spielberg film without Williams' music since 1985's The Color Purple, scored by Quincy Jones.
- There was some controversy over Rylance's decision to play Abel with a Scottish accent, given that Abel was born and educated entirely in the Tyneside region of north east England, where the Geordie accent is prevalent.
