Plot summary
As a baby, the nephew was placed in the household of a bachelor uncle, who raised him with love and planned a literary career for him. In his youth the young man meets Anabel, whom his poetical nature leads him to call Annabel Lee, and the two fall in love. The uncle, fixed on the boy's future, interferes. When Anabel calls to invite him to a garden party, the uncle accuses her of chasing his nephew like a common woman, and the insult sinks deep. Believing the young man's obligations to his uncle cannot honorably be broken, they decide to part. In the tales he has been reading, the nephew finds a vision of all nature as a series of murders, and with the old man in the way, his thoughts turn dark.
