Macon McCalman

Biography

Macon McCalman was an American actor who worked on stage, television and film, mostly in supporting parts. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, he helped found the Front Street Theatre there before making his Broadway debut in productions including The Last of Mrs. Lincoln and An Enemy for the People in 1971. His first Hollywood film role came in Deliverance (1972), and he went on to play heavies and authoritarian figures, dramatic and comedic, in films such as Fried Green Tomatoes (1991), Falling Down (1993) and The Falcon and the Snowman (1985), as well as in Roger Donaldson's Marie (1985). On television he took guest roles in series including Cheers, Kojak, Lou Grant and Murder She Wrote, and appeared in the miniseries Roots (1977) and Captains and the Kings (1976). He died in 2005.
