Plot summary
Potters Bluff is a small coastal town where visitors keep turning up dead. Mobs of townspeople carry out the murders, and someone photographs each victim as it happens. Sheriff Dan Gillis leads the investigation and works alongside William G. Dobbs, the local coroner and mortician. The killings continue, and Gillis can find no motive that connects them. His wife, Janet, behaves strangely. The case begins with George LeMoyne, an amateur photographer who arrives in town, is offered a modeling session by a local woman named Lisa, and follows her invitation; a crowd then beats and sets him on fire. He survives the attack.

- Dan O'Bannon disowned Dead & Buried, saying in a 1983 Starburst interview that Ronald Shusett had written it by himself but needed O'Bannon's name on the project, promising to use his changes; Shusett did not, and it was too late for O'Bannon to remove his credit.
- Dead & Buried was initially banned as a "video nasty" in the U.K. in the early 1980s, but the film was later acquitted of obscenity charges and taken off the Director of Public Prosecutions' list.
- Dead & Buried was Jack Albertson's final live-action film role; the actor died six months after the film was released.
