George Grizzard

George Grizzard was an American actor whose career spanned Broadway, film and television. A native of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, he grew up in Washington, DC and studied advertising and drama at the University of North Carolina. In 1950 he began professional work at Arena Stage and his first leading role there was in Dark of the Moon. His Broadway debut came in 1955 with The Desperate Hours. He appeared often in Edward Albee plays and played Nick in the original 1962 staging of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, winning a Grammy with his castmates. On screen he was in Advise & Consent (1962), From the Terrace (1960), Comes a Horseman (1978), Seems Like Old Times (1980) and The Deliberate Stranger (1986). He took a 1996 Tony for A Delicate Balance and a 1980 Emmy for The Oldest Living Graduate and in 2002 he was added to the American Theater Hall of Fame.
