Plot summary
Marie Ragghianti leaves an abusive marriage, returns to Tennessee with her three young children to live with her mother, Virginia Fajardo, and waits tables while she finishes a degree at Vanderbilt. When Eddie Sisk, a college acquaintance, becomes legal counsel to the newly elected governor Ray Blanton, she asks him for work, and he offers her the post of extradition officer for the state. She climbs quickly to parole board chief, first serving as the board's channel to the governor. In that post she grows uneasy with Sisk and Blanton, who press for paroles and full pardons for inmates with no grounds for either, and she tells them so.
