Plot summary

Rose Marie Lemaitre, a French Canadian orphan, is determined to live in the woods by a river. Mike Malone, an officer of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, believes the wilderness is no place for her and brings her to Fort Macroy, where she rebels until he locks her in the brig and sets the veteran corporal Barney McCorkle to watch her. Rose Marie joins the Mounties, but Inspector Appleby, arriving to inspect Mike's cavalry, objects to a woman in the ranks and has her sent to Maple Rock. She runs into the woods; Mike follows and tells her she is to become a respectable woman. On the way they meet James Duval, a fur trapper, and Mike places Rose Marie in Lady Jane Dunstock's care.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Filmed in the Canadian Rockies in CinemaScope, this version was MGM's first US produced film in the new widescreen medium, preceded only by the British-produced Knights of the Round Table, and the first movie musical of any studio released in that format.
  • An Indian totem dance choreographed by Busby Berkeley, the last work he choreographed, takes the place of the original number "Totem Tom Tom" and does not use that song's music or lyric, despite a claim otherwise on the DVD cover.
