Plot summary
Arthur Peabody, a middle-aged Bostonian, tells a doctor the story of his recent malaise. After he fell ill with influenza, he had gone with his wife Polly to St Hilda, a Caribbean resort. Singing from a rocky cay offshore drew him out in his boat to investigate and to fish, and he caught a mermaid, whom he named Lenore. She cannot speak. She is childlike, mischievous and alluring, and he teaches her to kiss. He keeps her hidden in a deep fish pond at the resort. Polly is drawn to Major Hadley, a suave Englishman also staying at St Hilda.
