Among his congregation is Babbie, a gypsy girl who moves through the village at will and works against Lord Rintoul, the nobleman set on keeping the villagers under his control as their labor dispute with him sharpens. Babbie carries a secret about Rintoul's part in the dispute. The conservative Gavin is at first appalled by her bold manners, then comes to value her. Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Katharine Hepburn initially rejected the role of Babbie, the gypsy-disguised noblewoman. She reconsidered, against the advice of her agent Leland Hayward, when Margaret Sullavan was offered the part.
- Much of the film's $650,000 budget, then considered a high amount, went on exterior shooting in California's Sherwood Forest and Laurel Canyon and on an elaborate village set built on RKO's Forty Acres back lot. The set was later reused in other films, including Laurel and Hardy's Bonnie Scotland.
- The film was popular, but its enormous cost left a small loss of $9,000 and helped give Katharine Hepburn a reputation as "box-office poison."
