Plot summary
In 1770s Boston, Johnny Tremain is apprenticed to the silversmith Mr. Lapham. When the wealthy Jonathan Lyte orders a sugar basin to match his silver, Lapham calls himself too old for the job. Johnny takes it on, but his attempts fail, and Paul Revere advises a larger, deeper handle. Working on the Sabbath to try the new design, Johnny burns his hand badly and is left without full use of it. He can no longer work as a silversmith, and no one will hire him. The Sons of Liberty take him on as a messenger. Desperate for money, he tells Priscilla Lapham that he is related to Lyte and shows her a christening cup with the family crest. He takes the cup to Lyte, who accuses him of stealing it.
