Biography

Karel Roden is a Czech actor from České Budějovice, born in 1962, who followed his father and grandfather into the profession. After studying at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, he began his feature film work in 1984 with a Czech comedy about student life. He became known for character parts, and in the 1990s he spent time in London, which helped his English. His American breakthrough came with 15 Minutes (2001), playing the criminal Emil Slovak, followed by the lawyer Carter Kounen in Blade II (2002), the Nazi Strucker in Bulletproof Monk (2003) and Rasputin in Hellboy (2004). Other films include The Bourne Supremacy (2004), Running Scared (2006), Mr. Bean's Holiday (2007), RocknRolla (2008), Largo Winch (2008) and Orphan (2009). He won Czech Lion Awards for Guard No. 47 and A Prominent Patient, received an Alfréd Radok Award in 1998, and voiced characters in Grand Theft Auto IV. He also appeared in the TV series McMafia (2019).

    Karel Roden's first feature film role came in 1984, playing Honza, a medical student, in the second part of the trilogy How the Poets Are Losing Their Illusions.

    Roden's character acting career took off in 2001 when he played the criminal Emil Slovak in the American psychological thriller 15 Minutes, opposite Robert De Niro.
