Plot summary
Jack Wild is a police officer still marked by the car bombing that killed his wife eight years earlier. The blast was meant for him, and his hotheaded reputation follows him through a gunfight with a terrorist gang, where an Interpol officer offers little cooperation. After an attack at his home, he learns the gang's next target is the Rocky Mountain Express, the train where his girlfriend Dana looks after VIP passengers. Wild commandeers a helicopter and drops onto the carriage. A detonation collapses the tunnel entrance, trapping the train, and the terrorists Hans Becker and Mr. Smith seize the passengers.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Rather than shoot in Canada like the original film, the sequel was made mainly in the Czech Republic, at North American Pictures' newly opened studios in Milín with an in-house effects team, because making this kind of picture in Canada without subsidies had become too expensive.
- The film reuses part of an expository flashback from the original and partly retconned the main character's backstory so that it ties into this film's secondary antagonist.
